What happened if a special person is killed.

I have a question about special persons that rule the island.
Let's say the mayor gets killed. How would that affect the government?
Will we have to assign a new mayor? Or is he able to continue as mayor after he respawned?

LuckyDuck just recently answered this question and he said that our governor would respawn in office still!
